It is often said that the thing which most distinguishes a writer is his voice.
Of course, in literature that is used to describe the way up particular author writes and gets his ideas across to his readers.
However, for Kyle Hamilton Barr, "voice" takes on a whole new meaning.
For him, it’s not just the voice of what he writes, but more importantly the voice with which he sings.
The Touch That Transforms is indeed his song - his story.
It is the story of a man with deep faith struggling with his sexuality, his identity and the meaning of what it means to be a Christian man in today’s world.
As a man who has also experienced same-sex attraction for much of my life, Kyle's story touched me on many levels.
I found that I had made very similar journeys of discovery throughout my life and have come to very similar conclusions.
However, you don’t need to have experienced attraction to the members of your own sex to understand and relate to Kyle’s story.
It is ultimately a Christian journey to which anyone and everyone can relate, through the common pitfalls of the world, sin, disappointments, pain and ultimate redemption in Jesus Christ.
Indeed, Kyle’s sometimes brutal honesty about his own shortcomings and struggles are what makes the book so accessible, real and authentic.
The reader will get a sense that he is actually in conversation with Kyle, so much so that there were a couple of times I had to do a self-check and realize that I did not actually know him in person and could not pick up the phone to continue the conversation.
In addition, Kyle sprinkles the wisdom he has gained through his journey throughout the book, in the form of quotations from the Scriptures and other useful sources of self discovery.
The author describes with great detail his continued progress and his relationship with God particularly through his music which he uses to give glory to the Almighty and to lead others to him.
It is as if Kyle’s musical voice sings through the pages of his written word almost like a soundtrack accompaniment.
Indeed, those who practice spirituality through contemporary Christian worship will find much in common with Kyle's charismatic musicality.
Despite all the twists and turns of Kyle‘s journey, perhaps the most impressive thing is his constant seeking of and submission to God‘s will for his life. Such devotion is not common, even in Christian circles and it is clear that Kyle has accepted his cross of same-sex attraction and with the help of Jesus Christ, has used it to truly transform himself on the path to holiness.
So on many levels Kyle Hamilton bar as truly found his voice and it is the voice of a good, humble holy and strong Christian man.
Allow this voice and this touch to transform you.
